Phoenix Area Business and Charity Team Up to Bring Food and Toys to Local Elementary School

Phoenix charity Positive Impact will team up with Uncle Bob’s Self Storage to bring holiday gifts and food items to Dunbar Elementary School on December 20th. This is the third year Uncle Bob’s and Positive Impact have combined forces to work with Dunbar Elementary.

Dunbar is a small, public, Title 1 School in south central Phoenix. Most of the students attending Dunbar reside in the Matthew Henson subsidized housing area, and all are eligible to participate in the free breakfast and lunch program.

Lori Nielsen, a Dunbar teacher for 20 years, has witnessed the event’s impact first-hand.

“I have students that are just as excited about the food as they are about their presents,”

Nielsen said. “I remember a kindergarten boy that saw his box of Ritz crackers and asked, ‘Can I open these right now?’ I never had these before.”

“Yet amidst all the torn paper and kids playing with their new toys, there are always a couple of kids that cling to their unopened present wanting to save it so they, ‘have a present under their tree’,” Nielsen said.

Last year, Uncle Bob’s and Positive Impact were able to donate 240 bags of toys and food to the school, and they expect to exceed that number this year. To help fund the effort, Uncle Bob’s employees donate their company Christmas party and employee gifts.

“The staff and students at Dunbar are great to work with and an important part of our community as well,” said Don Favreau, area manager of Uncle Bob’s Phoenix storage facilities. “Plus, the great people at Positive Impact make the event fun for all involved. Our staff truly enjoys being a part of it during the holidays.”

Since their inception in 1998, Positive Impact has raised more than $1,000,000 that has translated into life-giving medical procedures, groceries, and utility payments for struggling families and an avenue of hope to those in need.

“It truly makes one realize how blessed we all are when something as simple as peanut butter and jelly makes these kids so happy,” said Pam Gerber of Positive Impact. “This experience reminds me of the true spirit of Christmas, and frankly, why we are all put on this earth, to serve one another. The looks on the children’s faces each year is something I’ll always remember.”
