PODS® Houston Helps Keep Power Living Missions’ Community Garden Project Rooted

PODS® Houston, a moving and storage company, is lending a green thumb by donating a reliable PODS® container to help support the Power Living Missions’ new community garden project in historic neighborhood of Independence Heights, Texas. The project aims to improve nutrition, reduce hunger, provide income and bring residents together to help keep the neighborhood a nutritious place to live.

During the project, PODS will serve as an on-site staging ground for the volunteers to have access to gardening tools and equipment as they help plant organic vegetables just in time for spring. The donation from PODS Houston will help save Power Living Mission thousands of dollars in moving and storage logistics.

“When my wife and I heard about the community garden project, we were excited to

participate and help out as well as to provide a PODS® container for storage purposes,” said Phil Dvorak, managing partner for PODS Houston. “We are honored to support the Independence Heights gardening project so that residents can come together to have fresh produce and maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

Currently, donations are strongly needed for organic top soil and the public is encouraged to supply soil in order for the vegetables to grow properly. Community gardens also help children eat a more nutrient-rich diet than non-gardening families, promote physical activity, educate children and adults about nutrition, and help fight off crime.

“The community garden will help provide food security for the underserved families in Independence Heights and serve as a restoration of community pride,” said Yvette Leno, board member for Power Living Missions. “We look forward to making a difference in Independence Heights through sustainable community gardening and thank PODS Houston for donating their moving and storage services as we move the community forward through this support.”

It is a work in progress that continues to be improved. A limited number of raised garden beds will encompass the perimeter with garden rows filling in the center. This design will help realize the greatest yield of harvest production. Applications are being accepted for the limited number of raised beds that will be installed. The beds will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. To sponsor a plot for a deserving family, the monthly maintenance fee is $10 per month.
