U-Haul Expands Operations to Ames, Iowa

U-Haul Moving and Storage of Ames located at 710 S. Duff Avenue, is open for business. This 1.86 acre property consists of two separate parcels of land, with two buildings totaling 12,028 square feet. This space will feature a retail center along with truck and trailers rentals.

Randy Dickson, marketing company president U-Haul Company of Iowa, explained the historic nature of this building. The building was formerly Ames Rentals, a general equipment rental company, which occupied the building for 30 years. While most considered this building functionally obsolete, U-Haul considers it an asset to the Ames community.

“We are proud to have the ability to serve the moving public of Ames and offer a convenient way to meet their moving needs,” Dickson said. “It is a five-star location on one of the busiest streets in Ames.”

The opening of this facility is driven by U-Haul Company’s Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings eliminates the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps local cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.

Plans for this facility include the addition of self-storage and U-Box storage. Although there is still work to do in the building, the center is open for business– renting trucks and trailers, and selling moving supplies.

“The most exciting part of this venture is having the ability to reuse a building that was vacant,” Dickson explained. “It will be a beautiful facility when it is completed.”
