Natural disasters, fire, and a multitude of other perils can derail or even destroy a business anytime of the year, usually when it’s least expected. Natural disasters in 2017 and 2018 represented the heaviest economic losses for the global insurance industry in any two-year period. Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Florence, and Michael in the U.S., coupled with devastating wildfires in California, all contributed to the losses. In the case of Paradise, Calif., wildfires virtually wiped an entire city off the map.
