InJanuary 2019, speaking on a panel at the New York Self-storage Association Investment Forum, Gary Sugarman, COO of the William Warren Group (Stor- Quest), accurately described the storage sector in the coming year. “The fundamentals for the sector are good,” he says. “I’m just nervous about people being nervous.” Although market fundamentals have remained strong, Sugarman’s comments have proved prescient. A year of inverted yield curves, volatility in the market for 10-Year Treasuries, and political turmoil have fomented uncertainty
in investment markets, which typically makes investors nervous about the future. Nevertheless, self-storage continues to outperform other commercial real estate (CRE) sectors.
